Letter of Interest

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to express my interest in the Elementary Behavior Supervisor position at your school. Developing positive relationships with students and managing behaviors has been something that I have considered a strength of mine over my career. For the past seven years I have worked in regional classrooms for students with moderate cognitive impairments. I spent two years at the Clare-Gladwin Area School servicing students aged 20-26 years old and for the last five years I have worked at the regional program at Reeths-Puffer High School servicing students from 9th-12th grade from Holton, Reeths-Puffer, Montague and North Muskegon. In addition to those roles I had successful student teaching experiences at Mason Middle School teaching US History and E.E. Knight Elementary in Elsie, Michigan where I served as a reading interventionist for students with special needs.

Over the course of my experiences, especially in the special education setting, I have encountered many difficult behaviors. I have collaborated with behavioral specialists, therapists and families to develop and implement behavior plans effectively. I have also trained my para-professionals in how to implement behavior plans when necessary. Overall, my approach was to develop trusting relationships with the students to eventually eliminate the need for those plans. Through working with the families and taking time to develop relationships with the students, I have prided myself on being able to do just that and maximize the student’s academic potential during their time with me.

I am currently finishing up my masters program at Michigan State University with a focus in Educational Leadership and will graduate in August. Working as a behavior supervisor would be a dream come true as I really have a passion for helping students work through their behaviors and be able to perform to the best of their abilities. I believe my work experience has prepared me for this role and I look forward to the opportunity of collaborating and leading with teachers and support staff to benefit the lives of the students. I would also love the opportunity to work with elementary aged students again as I love the impact that can be made on their lives and educational career at such a young age. Thank you for taking time to consider me for this position.

Sincerely,

Tom O’Brien
